Saturday, January 20th, was a red letter day as 91springboard’s newest coworking space in Mumbai’s business heartland of Bandra-Kurla Complex, or BKC as it’s known, hosted their launch party celebrations. The day was filled with engaging and entertaining sessions and workshops on everything from painting to poetry to robotics, but the highlight was 91springboard’s trademark Reverse Pitch; a pitching event that flips the script on traditional pitching sessions by having VCs pitch to startups about their fund rather than the other way round.
As the commercial and financial capital of India, the biggest business hub in South Asia, and one of the epicenters of the modern global economy, Mumbai is one of the biggest centers of entrepreneurship, technological innovation, and creativity in the world. Mumbai is home to 28 billionaires and the city’s skyline is dotted with major financial institutions like the Reserve Bank of India and the Bombay Stock Exchange, and houses the headquarters to many of India’s largest and wealthiest conglomerates like the Reliance group, the Tata Group, the Aditya Birla Group, and Godrej.
The beating heart of India’s financial capital is the Bandra-Kurla Complex, or BKC; a business district that houses offices from almost every major consulting, legal, accounting, finance, and technology company that has a presence in India. So, it was really a no-brainer that we at 91springboard were inspired to open our third hub in Mumbai, and 15th hub in India, at BKC. With a capacity to seat over 400 people, interiors that exude a contemporary chic aesthetic, and a dedicated team of community managers, 91springboard’s new hub at BKC is fast becoming a destination of choice among startups, independent consultants, and even large corporations looking for office space in one of Mumbai’s most exclusive neighborhoods.
We launched this hub with a day full of crazy fun and activities, from workshops on poetry and robotics to the main event of the evening, the Reverse Pitch. We flipped the script on traditional pitching events, by bringing aboard investors like Capital G (Google Capital) , Lightbox, JSW Ventures, IvyCap Ventures and many more to pitch their portfolios and value propositions to an array of young entrepreneurs and startups.
The panel of investors, who possess decades of experience in identifying and nurturing some of India’s leading emerging companies, presented themselves and their sectoral priorities along with their operational experience, sector focus insights, and investment thesis. The investors were divided into two panels, the first focusing on early and growth stage investments while the second helped demystify corporate venture capital. A packed house then grilled the group by asking them about the factors that decide which entrepreneur gets funded and who doesn’t.
The evening concluded with a trademark 91springboard launch party, replete with beer pong, music, and the opportunity for members of the new hub to rub shoulders with the best and brightest from Mumbai’s startup and business ecosystem.
